She discusses the YouTube campaign and its contents, while Noble outlines the limits of what parents can do to keep children safe online. She is part of the review of the National Safe Schools framework and Aedy raises the possibility of bullying from someone who is not from the school. Noble recommends parents acting through a third party rather than confronting other parents. They discuss the media industry and Google's willingness to address the issue and Faulkner says the Smart Online Safe Offline program is being taken up.

Eleanor Hall

Presenter Ms Eleanor Hall 02 8333 2179

Hall says Austn school students say online bullying is worse than being taunted in the playground. One of the internet's biggest players is working to crack down on cyber bullying with Google launching its new internet campaign against the practice. The online campaign is driven by the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. Maree Faulkner , CEO, NAPCAN , said the campaign is unique because it talks to children in the digital world in their language and changing the behaviour of children who participate in the bullying process. Dr Toni Noble, Senior Lecturer in School of Education , Australian Catholic University , supports the initiative. Last week a coronial inquest into the death of a 14yo NSW boy heard the boy took his life after intense bullying, much of it on social networking sites.

Faulkner says that very young children are now using mobile phones and social networking websites. She emphasises that one of the issues with dealing with cyber bullying is how broad it can be, mentioning that children can be targeted through instant messaging such as MSN, through mobile phones, or through Facebook, Myspace, Bebo or Youtube. Faulkner explains that the program is designed to target the children who laugh at the cyberbullying, without being either the victim or the original perpetrator, and says that a website called Web Warriors has been started, and says that Google has supported SOSO and Profero, their creative agency.
